The UK Government is committed to help reduce the greenhouse gases in our environment, and as such has made commitments as detailed below.
The Government's Commitment
The global aim to reduce man’s impact on the environment has led to the formation of a number of key targets as outlined in the Energy White Paper; Our Energy Future – Creating a low carbon economy:
The Kyoto protocol has led to the UK being committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12.5% below 1990 levels by 2008-12. Also, a national goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20% of 1990 levels by 2010
The Government has accepted the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution’s (RECP) recommendation that the UK should put itself on a path towards a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of some 60% from current levels by 2050
The Government, as part of its energy policy, has specifically stated its desire to ensure every home is adequately and affordably heated. The White Paper also clearly identifies energy efficiency is likely to be the cheapest and safest way of addressing their objectives
